In 2017, increasing concerns from community members and officials resulted in study, discussion, and the ultimate adoption of several ordinances that restrict access to Leonia's residential side streets to Leonia residents and those going to or from a destination in Leonia, during peak drive periods.
Due to the widespread adoption of navigational apps such as Waze, highway traffic on residential side streets has been increasing to unprecedented levels. The result has been increasing concerns about the safety of Leonia residents, and increased costs to the community. Although Leonia continues to request assistance from agencies such as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the City of New York, thus far no help has been provided. In order to protect the safety of all Leonians, the Safe Streets initiative was implemented.
Main roads (Broad Ave., Grand Ave. and Fort Lee Rd.) in Leonia are able to be used without restriction by anyone at any time. Side streets fall under a general restriction (certain streets differ slightly) of residents and local traffic only during rush hour in the morning and evening, seven days per week. We have compiled more information below:
Residents are eligible to apply for a yellow hang tag, which helps more easily identify vehicles that might be traveling on roads during enforcement of this ordinance. The hang tag is not required, and does not grant additional legal privileges, it simply allows vehicles to pass through without delay. The hang tags are also your new parking pass, so if you have a hang tag you do not need to apply for resident parking pass. Residents can apply online here. You may also pickup a paper form in Borough Hall.
