Council Resignation Results in Vacancy on Leonia Borough Council

Effective July 16, 2019, Councilman Ben Choi has resigned from the Leonia Borough Council, in order to accept an appointment as the Municipal Court Judge for the City of Hoboken, New Jersey.

Councilman Choi began his term as a Councilperson on January 1 of this year, and has already made a very positive impact in our local government.  Mayor Zeigler and the members of the Leonia Borough Council congratulate Councilman Choi on his appointment, thank him for his service as a Councilperson, and wish him nothing but the best in his new role.

Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40A:16-11, "If the incumbent whose office has become vacant was elected to office as the nominee of a political party, the municipal committee of the political party of which the incumbent was the nominee shall, no later than 15 days after the occurrence of the vacancy , present to the governing body the names of three nominees for the selection of a successor to fill the vacancy. The governing body shall, within 30 days after the occurrence of the vacancy, appoint one of the nominees as the successor to fill the vacancy."

As Councilman Choi was a Democratic candidate for Council, the Leonia Democratic Municipal Committee will be submitting the names of potential successors, on or before July 31, 2019.

The Mayor and Council will then, at the August 12 meeting, appoint one of those individuals to fill the vacancy.  The individual selected will be sworn in immediately, and must then run as a candidate for the remainder of the term (expiring 12/31/2021) in the November 5, 2019 General Election.
